Gigabytes and gibibytes, megabits and megabytes per second, a link's monthly traffic — the things people mix up when choosing a server.

Size

Link speed

GB and GiB, bits and bytes

Providers and disk makers count in decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 10⁹ bytes), while Linux and Windows often show gibibytes (1 GiB = 2³⁰ bytes). That's why a 100 GB disk shows up as 93 GiB in the system — not a trick, just different units.

Link speed is given in bits: 100 Mbit/s is 12.5 megabytes per second. At full load such a link carries about 32 TB per month.

Frequently asked questions

How much traffic does a site need?

A small site needs a few terabytes a month with room to spare. Port speed and unmetered traffic matter more if you serve files or video.

Why is downloading slower than the link speed?

Link speed is in bits, while the browser shows bytes: divide by 8. Plus network overhead.
