Hosting glossary
Terms you meet in VPS plans — briefly and in plain words. Many link to catalog plans with that feature.
Virtualization and resources
VPS / VDS
A virtual server: a slice of a physical server with its own cores, memory, disk and root access.
KVM
Full virtualization: the VPS runs its own Linux or Windows kernel, memory is not shared with neighbours.
In the catalog: 726 plans
OpenVZ
Container virtualization: cheaper, but the kernel is shared with neighbours — not all software will run.
In the catalog: 11 plans
LXC
Linux containers: light and fast, but with a shared kernel and Linux only.
Hyper-V
Full virtualization from Microsoft — like KVM, common for Windows VPS.
In the catalog: 6 plans
vCPU (virtual core)
A CPU core given to a VPS. Usually a thread of a physical core that may be shared with neighbours.
Dedicated cores
Cores reserved for your VPS only — performance does not drop because of neighbours.
In the catalog: 31 plans
CPU clock speed
The speed of one core in GHz. Higher means faster single-threaded work — websites, games, 1C.
In the catalog: 331 plans
Memory (RAM)
Memory for running programs. Too little memory — the server slows down or crashes.
Cloud server
A VPS you can grow, shrink or delete at any time, often billed by the hour.
Scaling (upgrade)
Moving to a bigger plan without reinstalling the server.
Overselling
A provider sells more resources than the server has, betting that not all customers use them at once.
GPU server
A server with a graphics card for neural networks, rendering and computing.
Disks and data
NVMe
The fastest SSDs: many times faster than regular SSDs on heavy workloads.
In the catalog: 657 plans
SSD
Solid-state drive: fast and reliable, the VPS standard.
In the catalog: 349 plans
HDD
Hard disk: slow but cheap and large — for backups and file storage.
In the catalog: 99 plans
RAID
Several disks working as one: data survives a disk failure.
Backups
Copies of a server or data you can restore from after a mistake or a hack.
In the catalog: 106 plans
Snapshot
An instant copy of the whole VPS: roll back in a minute, e.g. before an update.
GB and GiB
Gigabyte (1000³ bytes) vs gibibyte (1024³ bytes): why a “100 GB” disk shows as 93 in the system.
Network and addresses
IPv4 address
The server's public address like 203.0.113.10. Usually one is included in the plan.
IPv6
Next-generation addresses: plentiful and often free as a whole subnet.
In the catalog: 245 plans
Port speed
The VPS network connection's top speed — for example, 100 Mbit/s or 1 Gbit/s.
Unmetered traffic
Transferred data is not billed — the bill does not grow however busy the server is.
In the catalog: 331 plans
DDoS protection
Filtering junk traffic so the server keeps working during an attack.
In the catalog: 288 plans
CDN
A worldwide server network that serves the site to a visitor from the nearest node.
ASN (autonomous system)
A provider's network number on the internet. It shows whose IP address it is.
PTR (reverse record)
A name tied to an IP address. A mail server needs it so mail does not land in spam.
DNS
The system that turns a site name into a server's IP address.
Location (data center)
The country and city where the server physically stands. It affects speed, laws and price.
Ping (latency)
The time for data to reach the server and come back. Depends above all on distance.
Tier III (data center level)
A data center reliability class: Tier III means redundant power and cooling, maintenance without downtime.
Subnet and CIDR
An address range notation like 192.0.2.0/24: the number after the slash is the mask length.
DNS record TTL
How many seconds a DNS record stays cached. It sets how fast an address change spreads.
Whois
Public domain data: registrar, registration and expiry dates, DNS servers.
Panels and software
Control panel
A web interface for sites, mail and databases on the server — no command line needed.
ISPmanager
The most widespread server panel for websites in Russia. Paid.
In the catalog: 378 plans
FastPanel
A free panel for websites on a VPS: domains, SSL, databases, backups.
In the catalog: 105 plans
Hestia Control Panel
A free open-source panel for websites, mail and DNS.
In the catalog: 68 plans
Root access
Full administrator rights on the server: install and configure anything.
SSH
A secure connection to the server's command line.
Windows license
The right to use Windows Server on a VPS. Included in the price or billed separately.
In the catalog: 84 plans
SSL certificate
Needed for HTTPS: encrypts the connection to the site and confirms its address.
Free administration
The provider helps set up and fix the server — at no extra cost.
In the catalog: 159 plans
