Root access
Full administrator rights on the server: install and configure anything.
Root is the main user in Linux (administrator in Windows). With root access you decide what software to install and how to configure the system. That is what sets a VPS apart from shared hosting.
The flip side is responsibility: security and updates are on you. Log in with an SSH key rather than a password, and do not work as root unless needed.
